The story of Chico Mendez
Francisco Alves Mendes Filho , AKA Chico Mendes (December 15, 1944 – December 22, 1988), was a Brazilian rubber tapper, unionist and environmental activist. He fought to stop the logging of the Amazon Rainforest to clear land for cattle ranching, and founded a national union of rubber tappers in an attempt to preserve their profession and the rainforest that it relied upon. He was murdered in 1988 by ranchers opposed to his activism.
In order to help them understand the advantages and disadvantages of deforestation, during Term 3, Year 9 students will be producing a TV documentary into the life of Chico Mendez. The above clip is part 1 of an American documentary into the story of Chico Mendez. Below are some useful websites:

The future of Antarctica
This highest, driest, and coldest continent was referred to in the 17th century as Terra Australis Incognita—unknown southern land. Although the continent is still largely a mystery, what is known is that Antarctica's delicate ecosystem is in danger.
During Term 3, Year 8 will be researching and preparing for a debate on the future of Antarctica. In the above clip, Mike Sharpe, experienced Antarctic tour operator, talks about the impact of tourism on the frozen continent. Below are links to websites which will help you research your role in the Antarctic debate:

1900-1920: the era of...?
Year 9 History students are well into their review of the 20th century. The first two decades are seemingly dominated by conflict, and no-one can ignore the horrors of The Great War when defining these decades. The clip of the Treaty of Versailles reminds us that the decisions made in 1919 did not make a lasting peace. But year 9 have been careful to note that war can bring unexpected changes, some of which are positive. How would you define these two decades? If 1900-1920 was a film, what would be the title? Post your ideas here. Then get ready in Term 3 to investigate how the next twenty years were turbulent times for Europe…..
