World War 1: Do you know any family history?

Where were your relatives during the First World War? Did any of your relatives fight in the trenches, or did they have any other involvement in this country or in other countries? Do some research, talk to grandparents and other elderly relatives about their relatives and who knows what you will find out! Please share your family history stories in your comments.

Year 9 are currently studying WWI, but students in other years and staff are welcome to contribute.

AS Law: an abusive use of stop and search?

Watch this video of a stop and search from 2008 at the Climate Camp gathering at Kingsnorth in Kent. Are the stop and searches legal? Also look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7940128.stm and the linked pages to gain more of an insight into policing at the Climate Camp (and some interesting definitions of weapons by the police). Please comment on the issue 'Individual Rights v Police Investigative Powers'.

Y10 Geography Winners!

Mrs Ahern's Y10 GCSE Geography class have been looking at different land forms. I listened to students describing different land forms with play-doh models. I was impressed with all the groups. The one I thought had the edge is shown in the picture above. I would like Y10 students to tell me what was good about this model and the explanation you heard in class. Many thanks to Mrs Ahern and Y10 students for your interesting work here.

Beliefs in Society

Ideology has several different meaning and is used in a variety of ways by different scholars. Karl Mannheim distinguishes between ideological thought and utopian thought, both of which distort reality. Please comment on how each of these distorts reality and how these concepts could be linked with Marxism.

Coastal Management Schemes

Y10 Geographers have been looking at the processes which attack coasts; erosion, weathering and mass movement. Various schemes exist to protect the coast e.g. rip-rap, recurved seawall, groynes, gabions, offshore reef, beach replenishment, cliff regrading and managed retreat.

Explain which sea defence schemes you think would be a) the most b) the least effective at protecting the coastline from erosion.
