Is advertising harmful? Medical experts in the north east of England have called for tighter controls on the advertising of alcohol. They have seen a 400% increase in the number of people in their early 30s admitted to hospital with liver disease caused by alcohol abuse. Research shows that advertising encourages children to start drinking earlier and to drink more. The Leveson inquiry is currently looking into the behaviour of the British press. It is examining the ‘culture, practice and ethics’ of the press as well as looking into the conduct of News International, owners of the News of the World after the phone hacking scandal. Madeleine McCann’s parents have just given evidence and spoken of their distress at press reports that they were responsible for their daughter’s death.
This enquiry gives General Studies students lots of examples to use in their ‘Conflict’ unit about ‘Media Bias’. Watch the McCann’s clip, and read the background to the Leveson enquiry. Then post your thoughts:

The Catholic Church declares a person to be ‘Blessed’ if they have led an exemplary and holy life. In this sense, they are role models for Catholics to imitate. Their lives provide meaningful examples to people on how to lead a good and virtuous life.

Catholics believe that when a person dies and goes to heaven, their soul remains spiritually united with Christians on Earth. This is known as the Communion of Saints. Just as they might ask a friend to pray for them, they also turn to saints to help them in their lives.

Are Women Treated Equally in Britain today?

Would Sylvia Pankhurst have been disappointed by the position of women in Britain today? She hoped that women gaining the vote would be the first step towards big improvements in the position and status of women. Has the vote brought equality? Are women treated equally in Britain today?

In 1928 all women over 21 were given the vote. This gave them the same rights as men. Today over 50% of voters are women. What percentage of women are MPs today?

In 1979, Britain elected its first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. She claimed that, 'The battle for women's rights has largely been won'. Do you agree?

After both the First and Second World Wars, most women who had worked in men's jobs went back to their old jobs. By the 1960s women were becoming increasingly frustrated that top jobs were not open to them. The 'women's liberation movement' campaigned for change and helped persuade the government to pass laws making it illegal to pay women less than men for the same job (1970) and outlawing discrimination in jobs, housing and other areas (1975). Are there many women in top jobs today? Do women get paid the same?

Holocaust Memorial Day 2010

During the Second World War, the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews in specially built death camps. This is known as the Holocaust. There were many other groups of people that the Nazis considered to be enemies who were also killed in the camps. Whilst there have been many terrible examples in history of whole groups of people being attacked and murdered, the Holocaust is unique in terms of the deliberate planning and massive organisation involved.

Wednesday 27th January 2010 is Holocaust Memorial Day. The day aims to increase understanding of the Holocaust, but also to help us learn from the events and from those who survived. The Geography of Conflict

This Y8 geography unit (DAA) introduces students to the topical issue of conflict. A particular focus of the unit is the extent to which conflict can influence, and be influenced by, geography. Through the study of historical and contemporary conflicts on a range of scales, each lesson encourages students to develop an awareness of the causes and impacts of conflict, and of the interconnectedness that results in links between conflict and their own lives.

Lesson 2 looks at the causes of conflict, using Darfur as a case study. The image above links to a viral video game for change that provides a window into the experience of the 2.5 million in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Players must keep their refugee camp functioning in the face of possible attack by Janjaweed militias. Players can also learn more about the genocide in Darfur that has taken the lives of 400,000 people, and find ways to get involved to help stop this human rights and humanitarian crisis.

A frail, former US carworker, accused of helping to murder 27,900 Jews at a Nazi death camp, goes on trial in Munich this week. He stands accused of having helped the Nazi death camp at Soribor factory to function, though he denies being a camp guard at Sobibor, in Nazi-occupied Poland. He arrived to court in a wheelchair, with his eyes close, though he he seemed conscious.

Defence lawyers say he will not speak at all during the trial, and will neither confirm nor deny that he was at Sobibor.

How Powerful was Henry II?

Year 7 students have been thinking about Henry's quarrel with his Archbishop, Thomas Becket. Henry hoped that when he gave his friend, Thomas Becket, the job of archbishop that Becket would control the church for him. Henry wanted to choose his own bishops and get rid of those he did not like. But, Becket refused and took the side of the bishops. He ran the church in his own way! After many arguments, Henry lost his temper and shouted, "will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest?". Four knights heard this and decided to murder Becket.
The Pope was furious about the killing of Becket. He refused to help Henry until Henry showed that he was sorry for what had happened. To show he was sorry, Henry was whipped by monks!
What does this story tell us about the power of Henry II? Could he do whatever he liked? Or did he get into trouble because he tried to take too much power?

We seem to constantly bombarded with facts, figures and statistics on crime and punishment. Some indicate that the country's criminal activity is getting worse, whilst others suggest that we are tackling this issue with increasing success.

Religion and etnicity. Often both are confused with each other, however can the distinction be as clear as the difference in skin colour? AS Students have been learning about the Cosmological Argument as proof for the existence of God. Students were given the challenge of using Play-doh to make a model to help their explanations of Aquinas' Three Ways. I was very impressed with how the students tackled the challenge and the various ways they illustrated the Three Ways. Well done kiddies :-)

Last week year 7 students took part in the 'Council of Beings' after learning about the 1986 Assissi declarations when leaders of world's major religions gathered to put forward their views on the environment and discuss how best to manage growing concerns over the welfare of our planet.

The year 7 students discussed the environmental problems faced by different animals and plants and what could be done to help protect them. Reflecting on last week's session, students should now give a brief explanation of which aspect of creation they feel needs to most help and why. Malham is a village located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

In the morning, Y10 students carried out questionnaires , pedestrian counts and land use surveys in the village. They carried out river investigations in the afternoon.
