The Atomic Bomb

Can the dropping of the Atomic bomb on Japan in 1945 be justified? Was America saving lives by bringing the war to a decisive end? Or were the bombs simply a scientific experiment into the impact of this new and terrible weapon?
Year 9 History students will shortly be making their own decision. This will form part of their last History assessment, and help to determine their End of Key Stage Level.
View the clip and post your thoughts: was America right to drop the bomb?

Having predicted the 'rise of communism' from the Soviet Union, I am quite convinced that Truman was merely attempting to intimidate his opponents in Russia - he was sending them a message that read: 'we are not afraid to use our weapons of mass destruction'. Communism was to be America's next opponent, wasn't it? And America, a capitalist society as they were, thought ahead and 'silently' attacked the communists.
There was an article in Telegraph and Argus that was released in 2005 - I don't know if anyone read it, but apparently a Professor from a university (I can't remember which) had gathered evidence contrary to the popular stereotypical view of 'fierce, barbaric Japanese soldiers'. In fact, it showed that the American soldiers had developed an interest in using dead Japanese as mascots! So Hiroshima-bomb probably wasn't anything to do with revenge.
I really am quite convinced that the dropping of the bomb was solely to do with scaring communists, although I can't be sure. I am currently trying to collect evidence for my view from the online national archives, please can someone let me know if they bump into anything interesting?
Thank you!
