Medicine Through Time

Year 10 History students have been considering the success of medical treatments used by ancient civilisations. One such treatment which has been in the headlines recently is acupuncture. This is based on the idea that illness is caused by channels of energy in the body being disrupted. Placing needles at strategic points in the body is said to rebalance these channels.

This raises two interesting questions for students of ‘Medicine Through Time’. Should modern medicine fully embrace these alternative therapies? Should they even be funded on the NHS? Have your say and use these ideas to give a wider perspective to your exam answers.
