The challenges of an increasing greying population are that in certain areas of the UK there is a large amount of pressure on the services in the area, for example Christchurch. The NHS for example will suffer as the expenses involved in coping for the long-term chronic conditions will mean there may need to be a rise in income tax to reduce the dependency ratio.
Another challenge is that the housing issue will become worse, as people are living longer, occupying housing for longer, therefore housing prices will rise making it more difficult for the young to buy their first homes.
Another challenge is that an increasing ageing population may force many of the young out of an area, and therefore the dependency ratio will rise applying more pressure on the local government to cope.
An opportunity is however that an ageing population are more likely to occupy the greying pound, and therefore may create new markets, helping the British economy.
Also, they are less likely to cause crime therefore there may be less need for police officers and other crime-related services which could relieve the pressure from the government.
