AS General Studies B - Unit 1 conflict

Arts and Media
It is one of the roles of the arts to give pleasure, and it is another to provide entertainment.

To what extent is it their role to make us think?

You might consider:
  • the difference between mass and minority arts
  • the difference between verbal and graphic arts
  • whether there is a conflict between thinking and feeling

art can be seen as film and music as well as paintings - the first is majority and the second somewhat minority yet elitist

many children films have "good morals" hidden or openly beside the main entertainment, particularly newer ones such as Happy Feet where the whole story is based on "being true to yourself" and "not changing who you are".
Older audiences who watch these spot these morals easier and thus think about them perhaps in more detail than children e.g. Happy Feet also has messages about over-fishing and cruely keeping animals in zoos that will make an older person think more

Art comes in many forms, including music and advertisements. When looking at art there are some meanings hidden within it. Music especially tends to have a role of making people think about certain aspects within society. Artists such as Black Eyed Peas who released “where is the love” made people think about racism, global warming and the general negative images which are portrayed in the media. Art in forms of graffiti can also have a role of informing people as this is an artistic way of showing a persons feelings towards something.

Art can be seen in the form as expression and inspiration to people. There are a number of different types of art that can have different messages and morals behind it. For example, the Black Eyes Peas- where is the love is song all the do with racism and living in world that will help to understand why different people should live together in a harmony. At first people may think that the song is a good one to listen to but after they listen to it properly they will be able to hear what the true message behind it actually is. Another example is through art where Picasso from the Guernica which show aggressive art but when you look closely the art is good to look at.
