AS General Studies B - Unit 1 conflict

Arts and Media

Increasingly, people read the news on the internet, watch it on television or hear it on the radio.

Discuss whether we could do without newspapers.

You might consider:
  • the differences in the presentation of the news

  • whether there would be more or less bias

  • whether some of the truth would be lost

We could do with newspapers because it informs and educates large audiences.

We could do without newspaper because they can be bias and invade peoples privacy

Without news we would be less informed of the global news. Also we would be less informed about more local news which are only available in the newspapers and not on the news.

There are many ways of gaining information without newspapers, without the newspapers people will be persuaded into a point that is bias as most people watch the news on t.v and read the newspaper. If newspapers are just being scrapped, then miost people will just be seeing on point of the argument, leading toa bias view.

Today we have a lot of other sources for the latest news. The internet, television, radio, telephone calls etc. As a result of this, newspaper circulation figures have decreased over the years. Which suggests people are not interested in newspapers as they used to be.

Newspapers are a very imporatant source of information and news, and are often used to state peoples demographic. People who are heavily involved in business will read a newspaper such as the Times, as it contains information and news on large organisations and the economy.
Newspapers also offer many companies another source of advertising, making it cheaper than T.V advertising which can cost thousands of pounds.

Some people may argue that we don't need newspapers because of the other sources that are available to us. Some of these are the internet and radio. These sources provide us with a lot of detailed information and we have reported from all other the world that report the information to us about current affairs. They give examples of opinions from others that have experienced the trauma. Newspaper could be seen to be biased which isn’t very good because the information is only viewed from one side of the argument. You also have to pay for newspapers and radios/the internet provide us with detailed information that is free.

You would begin by making a simple introduction:

People are constantly reading the news, referring to television and hearing news on the radio, but how far has technology developed and become such that newspapers and paper based methods of news are not needed anymore.

Then make a rough plan; discuss the advantages, disadvantages for each of the bullet points listed.

Points that could be added on are:

> how technology is increasing rapidly overtime
> comparison between how the newspapers and media have changed our lives - better?
> accessibility of media, radio, tv and newspapers

include examples to support your points and why you think they are advantages and disadvantages

Finally conclusion:

Overall, (draw conclusions from your points-summarise and finish with a statement that answers the question! ...... including a personal opinion

it depends on what age group is concerned.

Older people will need the newspapers as a common method of reading the news.

Some people may agree as the use of internet is on the increase, the use of television and internet news is increasingly popular as advanced technology makes reading the new more efficient for the public.

- bias including images (specific things) e.g. Iraq war, showing horrific images of injured children this however may not be the case everywhere in Iraq
- newspapers- written therefore perceived may be different lights
- some people might appreciate newspapers as they have been around forever
- various newspapers, different information can be perceived through them. News channels have a specific amount of time which they can report on.

Although we are now able to find out about news through various sources other than newspapers, these sources are not always to be trusted. For example, many people think that news found on the internet is always reliable however anybody can post 'news' on the internet, and a lot of the time the facts are wrong or it is entirely made up just for a joke.

On the other hand, newspapers aren't a complete neccecity as there are a lot of stories that go into them that not everybody would want to read. By watching the news on the television, people are told the most important stories with the most public interest. Or if they chose to search the internet for news, they could search for a specific type of news that they are interested in, for example celebrity, financial etc; this would be hard to do in a newspaper.

Because of the technological capabilities of our culture, news is now availble in sources other than newspapers. For those who have a busy lifestyle, purchasing a newspaper and finding the time to read it can be unrealistic. Therefore, such people are making use of resources such as the internet to access news updates quickly and easily. In addition to the obvious practicalities, by using the internet to check the news, people can focus specifically on the news topic of their choice, for example celebrity news or sports news.

However, there are negatives to relying on such sources as the ineternet to find out the news. Because of the fact that anyone with internet access can put information, correct or incorrect, on public domain, there are far more opportunities for false news articles to be publicised, leading to misunderstandings.
