Holocaust Memorial Day 2010

During the Second World War, the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews in specially built death camps. This is known as the Holocaust. There were many other groups of people that the Nazis considered to be enemies who were also killed in the camps. Whilst there have been many terrible examples in history of whole groups of people being attacked and murdered, the Holocaust is unique in terms of the deliberate planning and massive organisation involved.

Wednesday 27th January 2010 is Holocaust Memorial Day. The day aims to increase understanding of the Holocaust, but also to help us learn from the events and from those who survived. Having watched Daniel Ratcliffe's (star of Harry Potter) film, please comment on what you think should be learnt from the Holocaust and its survivors.

I think we can learn from the Holocaust to be tolerant and accepting of people from other countries, religions, cultures and societies.

We can also learn from the survivors that although events like this are still taking place today, hope for a better future is important.

Plus I think it is key that those who object to similar events that are happening today take the time, when they can, to send letters or e-mails to register their views through human rights groups/ organisations. Without a strong voice of objection those committing these acts may believe it is acceptable to do so.
